MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Beer and wine went on sale for the first time at TCF Bank Stadium on Saturday.

Ever since the Gophers moved into “The Bank,” alcohol has been off limits.

Originally, university leaders wanted to limit liquor to the luxury seats, but state lawmakers thought it should be available for everyone.

As fans now tailgate around the stadium, certain festivities no longer need to stay outside.

“It’s a smart thing to do,” said Andy Voigt. “It makes sense.”

But new sales also come with several restrictions.

Alcohol will only be sold in two areas, the West Plaza and outside Gate A.  Both areas are far from the student section.

Customers will also only be sold two drinks at a time.

Liquor sales end after the first half.

Anyone who appears under the age of 30 will have to show their ID.

Extra police will also patrol the stadium watching for drink hand-offs and compliance officers will also keep tabs on every purchase. But for many fans, it’s a small sacrifice after three years of dry football games.

“It’s about time,” Connie Carroll said.

Hard liquor is still not for sale.

The University of Minnesota is the first school in the Big Ten to offer a “beer garden” type service.
